Introduction to Nursing in Australia

Aim of the Course
You are an overseas Registered Nurse and you are coming to nurse in Australia on a temporary or visitor’s visa – or with the intention of becoming a permanent resident?

This course aims to help you make that transition smoothly. The result? A feeling of confidence about your competence as an international registered nurse working in the Australian Health care system. Yes, human bodies are basically the same all over the world; and the way we treat illnesses in their various forms is basically the same; so too the challenges.

Critical Thinking?
Nevertheless, perhaps your mind is becoming a critical thinker! You are asking yourself: what do I really face?  Is Australia made up of Australians – or people who have become Australians? Who were the first Australians?  What happened when Europeans arrived in 1788? What are the consequences for the health system? Are there legal differences, ethical differences?  What about documentation: paper, computer or etched in stone! Medication? Protocols, procedures, politics, paperwork, practices?  Emergency codes? Behavioural codes?  Occupational Health and Safety measures in Australia? Blood transfusion procedures?  What do Australians mean when they talk about
Cultural Orientation and Safe Practice?  All that and more!

Developing Confidence and Competence
Yes, there will be similarities but, inevitably, there will also be differences.  Maybe you know what to expect.  There again, maybe you don’t! That is where this course comes in. Probably, until you complete the course you may not know what you do not know about the Australian Health Care System.  So, the course content is specifically designed to assist you with recognition of the similarities and, more importantly, it may bridge the gap between your country and Australia in terms of the social, ethical, legal and regulatory elements associated with nursing.

As you bridge that knowledge gap, your confidence about your competence to work in a unique Australian Health environment will escalate.  From then on? Smooth sailing into Australia’s world of nursing!
