HLT32507 Certificate III in Health Service Assistance is aimed at workers who are in direct contact with patients/clients on a day-to-day basis. The employees work under supervision most of the time but are sometimes required to take a more supervisory role. These workers provide support services to nursing staff and ward clerks with duties such as food service, transportation of clients and ward housekeeping.
These workers can assist in the delivery of the following direct care activities as allocated by a Registered Nurse and organisation’s policy and procedure.
- Showering, bathing, sponging, repositioning, pressure area and skin care
- Hair washing, shaving, mouth and denture care ,eye and ear care
- Assistance with toileting, provision, removal and cleaning of bedpans and urinals
- General ward ambulation and support mobilisation as per plan of care
- Reinforce instructions on use of aids for mobility or care as detailed in plan of care, where appropriate
- Assist with positioning, posture maintenance and comfort
- Observe and report patient completion of and performance of tasks in line with care plan
- Set up and assistance with patient meals and fluids for assessed low risk patients
- Care of the deceased
Total duration of the course is 410 hours including 120 hours of work experience placement.

The modes of delivery intended for this course are:
1) E-Learning (Online Delivery).
2) Students are required to complete a simulated practical session and assessment for 4 days.
If the student did not achieve the required competency; additional sessions may require.
3) Work Experience Placement.
There is no applicable pathway in to this qualification. Candidates may progress to higher level qualifications within and/or across the community sector.

Applicants seeking entry in to this course should meet the following criteria.
- Applicants should be 18 years or over at enrolment.
- Have successfully completed year 10 of secondary school or equivalent or be of mature age.
- Communication: applicants should be able to use and respond to written language including some unfamiliar material in a variety of contexts.
- Applicants are required to complete a Language, Literacy and Numeracy test (LLN) and attend an interview session during enrolment
- Satisfactory National Police Clearance Certificate will be required for the work experience placement.
- Working with Children Check, Vaccination/Immunization Certificate and Proof of Immunity (e.g. serology test results) shall be required for Work Experience Placement, as applicable.
- Applicants planning to do e-Learning must have access to a computer with internet and basic computer skills.
- No prerequisite units of competency.
