About This Course
The course is designed for all qualified Personal Care Attendants working in residential, community or home settings responsible for either administering medication or the provision of self-medication.  On completion of this course participants will gain an understanding of the legal requirements for medication administration, demonstrate understanding of underpinning knowledge of medication administration, develop skills and gain competency in administering medications within their scope of practice.

Course content
Course include theory and practicals (lab sessions and work place experience)

Theory
Unit: HLTAP301B Recognize healthy body systems in a health care context
Unit: CHCCS305B Assist clients with medication

Contents

  1. Human Anatomy and physiology
  2. Basic knowledge of commonly used medicines/drugs, including prescribed and over the counter medications, expected effects of medication being administered, side effects, medication errors
  3. Infection control
  4. Legislation, duty of care, lines of authority
  5. Correct handling of medications, appropriate storage
  6. Organization procedures related to medication including use of medication charts and documentation
  7. Handling contingencies / emergencies
  8. Role of a care assistant who is trained in administering medications


Practicals
:
Infection control (Hand washing, waste disposal and management, use of personal protective equipments).
Administering medications from a Webster pack.
Administration of liquid medicines, eye ointments, eye/ear drops and topical administration of medicines.
Nebulisation.

Assessment Methods:
Participation in class discussions, oral questions, practical assessment and observation on correct medication administration techniques, exam, and work place assessment

Course Award:
On successful completion of the course, participants will be issued with a Certificate of Attainment- Medication administration
