The HLT57715 Diploma of Practice Management reflects the role of business or practice managers who manage the operation of small to medium sized health practices. This qualification covers the skills and knowledge required to oversee the operations and promotion of medical, dental and health practices.

The aim of the course is to produce highly skilled, competent, confident, critically thinking Practice Managers with a nationally accredited qualification in order to practice in a variety of health practice areas including medical, dental, chiropractic, podiatry, rehabilitation, community, mental health or aged care settings in Australia.

The healthcare sector is dynamic and challenging, and healthcare administrative professionals must be sharp-thinking, flexible and adaptive. This course teaches the necessary skills and critical core competencies such as communication, leadership, professionalism, knowledge, and business skills.

FACE TO FACE/ CLASSROOM:

The course is provided through teacher led classroom mode delivery. It will be delivered be delivered over 810 hours including theory (20 contact hours per week at an IHNA campus), self-paced structured e-learning, simulation training (120 hours) and at least 160 hours of work based training / professional experience placement (PEP) in two blocks of 2 weeks each after each semester.

Besides the above structured learning, students are advised that they will be required to do approximate 10 hours per week of unstructured learning.

The simulation training is for review of the learning activities, practicing communication, work based skills, management skills and to undertake other assessments e.g.: group presentation/individual presentation.

BLENDED:

This course will be delivered over 810 hours, including theory, self-paced structured e-learning, simulation training (120 hours) and at least 160 hours of work based training / professional experience placement (PEP) in two blocks of 2 weeks each after each semester. The student opting blended form of delivery have to mandatorily attend 1 day of contact theory support sessions per week.

Blended students also need to complete 12 hours of structured e-learning per week. Besides the above structured learning, students are advised that they will be required to do approximate 10 hours per week of unstructured learning.

The simulation training is for review of the learning activities, practicing communication, work based skills, management skills and to undertake other assessments e.g.: group presentation/individual presentation.

Students enrolling in blended mode of delivery will have the option to attend the orientation online or on-campus in the first week, which will cover campus, course, academic, online library orientation.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS:

There are no pre-requisites or any other training package entry requirements for this course.

ADMISSION CRITERIA:

IHNA has in place admission criteria for courses in its scope as required by its ‘Application and Enrolment Procedure for VET Courses’ to ensure that candidates meet industry requirements.

  • Applicants are required to be 18 years old and above and need to be Secondary School year 10 pass,

OR

  • Be of mature age which can be demonstrated by a candidate who is at least of 21 years and has a qualification at Certificate II level or higher, OR has 2 years industry experience in a role that requires the use of written documentation and communication

In addition, all the applicants are required to have successfully completed an ACSF test and demonstrate competence as working at Level 3 for all indicators to enrol for this qualification (issued within the last 12 months from the time of admission).

It is also essential for the student to possess basic computer skills.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders are encouraged to apply.

PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE PLACEMENTS (PEP)

Professional Experience Placements (PEP) is a compulsory component of this course and 100% attendance is mandatory. Students must complete all theory and simulation components satisfactorily prior to attending placements.

The Professional Experience Placements will be 5 days a week. Students may be allocated a morning (AM) or afternoon (PM) shifts. Morning shifts usually start at 7 am and evening shifts can finish at 10.30pm. Each shift is 8.5 hours long (including 30 mins meal break).

PEPs are undertaken in partnership with a wide range of placement providers. These providers are located throughout metropolitan, regional and rural areas, and in some cases interstate. Students must consider that they may be required to travel or relocate for the duration of the placement to the facility location. Students must attend as per schedule; no special arrangements or changes will be made on the allocated placements. PEPs may be cancelled without prior notice by the facility.

Additional Requirement for professional experience placement.

  • A satisfactory National Police Clearance / Australian Federal Police Clearance Certificate (AFP)/ NCC will be required for all PEPs
  • IHNA highly recommends students to complete the immunization process before the Professional Experience Placement start date as some facilities will not provide placement to student without immunisation.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

While IHNA will work with you to make “reasonable accommodations” in the campus lab and classroom, there are work place practice conditions that occur in the workplace environment that are beyond IHNA’s control. The physical requirements below are necessary to function in the healthcare facility and/or community setting. Students must be able to perform and complete course objectives and requirements with or without reasonable accommodations otherwise you will not be enrolled.

Skills and abilities that are needed to perform client care to pass the course objectives and requirements are:

  • Strength: Sufficient to assist with lifting and transferring a client, and perform CPR
  • Mobility: Sufficient mobility to bend, stoop, and bend down to the floor; ability to move around rapidly; and to move in small, confined areas.
  • Hearing: Sufficient to hear through the stethoscope to discriminate sounds; to hear cries for help; to hear alarms on equipment and emergency signals; and various overhead pages.
  • Vision: Sufficient to make physical assessments of client and equipment.
  • Communication: Able to communicate in both verbal and written formats; and interact with clients, staff, and faculty supervisors.

Assessment strategies are implemented for collecting evidence and making judgements about whether competency has been achieved by the student. The assessments confirm whether an individual can perform to the standards expected in the workplace, as expressed in the relevant endorsed unit of competency.

Enrolling in this qualification and availing the relevant state funding, may affect student’s future training options and the eligibility for further government subsidised training.

Students eligible and opting for government funding must attend 20 hours of classroom sessions per week. Students failing to attend the classroom sessions will not be able to avail the funding and will be required to pay the full course fees.

VET STUDENTS LOANs

From January 1st 2017, the VET FEE-HELP scheme of the Australian Government has been replaced by VET Student Loans. To minimise disruption to existing students, a phased approach is being taken to transition from VET FEE-HELP to the new VET Student Loans program, whereby students wishing to continue their studies under the existing VET FEE-HELP arrangements will need to opt-in. The VET Student Loans is a loan program that helps eligible students enrolled in higher level vocational education and training courses at approved course providers pay their tuition fees. Access to a VET Student Loan is approved by the Australian Government Department of Education and Training.

VET Student Loans

ELIGIBILITY

To get a VET Student Loan, you must be an eligible student who is studying an approved course with an approved course provider. You must apply to the government using the approved form, and must confirm your engagement and progression to continue to access the loan throughout your course.

Further details of eligibility are given below:

• You are an Australian citizen, or a New Zealand Special Category Visa (SCV) holder who meets the long-term residency requirements, or a permanent humanitarian visa holder.
• You have not exceeded the FEE-HELP limit.
• You are enrolled with an approved course provider in an approved course and have enrolled in accordance with the application requirements.
• You are studying the approved course primarily at a campus in Australia.
• Your course meets the course requirements, if it:

• is specified on the VET Student Loans (courses and loan caps) determination (the courses and loan caps determination); and
• delivered by an approved course provider; and
• is a qualification of diploma, advanced diploma, graduate certificate or graduate diploma in the Australian Qualifications Framework.

• You have been assessed by your approved course provider as academically suited to undertake the approved course by either:

• providing your Australian Year 12 Certificate; OR
• by providing evidence of successful completion of an Australian Qualifications Framework Certificate IV or higher qualification (where the language of instruction is English); OR
• displaying competence at Exit Level 3 in the Australian Core Skills Framework in both reading and numeracy through an approved Language, Literacy and Numeracy test.
• In addition, your approved provider must reasonably believe you show competence in completing the course.

• You meet the Tax File Number (TFN) requirements.
• You have a Unique Student Identifier (USI) or are otherwise exempt.
• You have read the 2017 VET Student Loans information booklet
• You have given the required documents to your approved course provider and submitted the loan application form by the first census day no less than two business days after enrolling.

FEE-HELP LIMIT

You can borrow up to the FEE-HELP limit to pay your tuition fees. For 2017, the FEE-HELP limit is $100,879 for most students. There is no interest charged on HELP debts.
For some students, a 20 per cent loan fee applies to VET Student Loans for full fee paying / fee for service students.

REPAYMENT

You must start repaying your HELP debt through the tax system once your income is above the compulsory repayment threshold, even if you are still studying. The threshold is adjusted each year and for the 2017-18 income year, it is $55,874 or above.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is about the skills and knowledge you’ve gained through work and life experiences, no matter how, when or where the learning occurred. We acknowledge your previous achievement of competencies or learning outcomes that may count towards your qualification. RPL acknowledges that people learn in many different ways and that learning may have been obtained through:

•   Formal learning – which takes place within an institution, such as in a school system, college or at TAFE, and is formally recognised with grades, diplomas or certificates;
•   Informal learning – occurs in a variety of places, such as at home, work, and through daily interactions and relationships with members of society;
•   Non-formal learning – you had a formal learning environment, but is not formally recognised within a curriculum or syllabus framework (e.g. from workshops, short courses, seminars, community or interest-based courses, conferences);
•   A mix of the above.

This recognition process is evidenced in accordance with the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) and could provide you with a full or partial qualification and avoid duplication of training. You may be able to complete your course faster through recognition of your previous study, work skills and past experience as credits towards completion of your course. Some of our courses also have recognised study pathways, making learning more accessible. Applications for RPL can be made prior to enrolling.

HOW ARE MY SKILLS ASSESSED?

Your skills will be assessed against industry standards. This is done by an RPL assessor. You may be asked to:

•   Perform tasks or jobs
•   Talk about and explain how you do those jobs (through a structured interview process)
•   Provide evidence of your work
•   A visit to your workplace may be organised so you can demonstrate your abilities. You may have to provide job descriptions, references or documented evidence of performance appraisals.
•   The assessor will consider your skills and knowledge and match them against a suitable qualification.

OVERSEAS QUALIFICATIONS

If your qualifications, training or skills were gained outside Australia, you might be able to get recognition for your skills or qualifications to determine your eligibility to gain credit for the intended course of study. We can initiate this process on the available courses for which RPL is applicable.

APPLICATIONS FOR RPL

If you intend on applying for RPL:

  • Please request the RPL application by contacting our admission officers directly on 1800 22 52 83 or email enquiry@ihna.edu.au state your request.
  • Carefully read the information contained within the RPL Student Guide.
  • Send your RPL application to our Admissions Officer using the RPL Student Information Form (fully complete all sections).
  • Collate copies of all required documents to be used as evidence of your prior learning/experience.
  • Attach these documents to your application.
  • Submit the Application Form and documented evidence via email to enquiry@ihna.edu.au
  • There is an application Fee of AUD$200.00 to conduct the RPL assessment and evaluation.

Credit Transfer (CT)

Applicants for Credit Transfer must complete the credit transfer application form, attach a copy of a verified Award or Statement of Attainment and submit the application to the Course Coordinator. The Course Coordinator must check the Award or Statement of Attainment and grant Credit Transfer for identical units that have been identified as being completed at another Registered Training Organisation. Verified copies of Qualifications and Statements of Attainment used as the basis for granting Credit Transfer must be placed in the student files. The student and the Course Coordinator must sign the completed Credit Transfer record. Granting of Credit Transfer must be recorded as a unit outcome in the student's file. Student’s individual training plans will be adjusted to reflect any Credit Transfer granted. Credit Transfer does not attract a fee.
